Shana Martin Photography: Blog en-us (C) Shana Martin Photography (Shana Martin Photography) Tue, 28 Feb 2017 19:25:00 GMT Tue, 28 Feb 2017 19:25:00 GMT Shana Martin Photography: Blog 120 80 Preparing for your session~ Sr. girls

Now that you’ve booked your session, we have a few tips for you to help you get ready for your close up. Follow these guidelines the weeks leading up to your session and we’ll take care of the rest!

  • Choose two to three outfits to wear during your session and lay them out so they are ready to go. Make sure they are clean and wrinkle-free.
  • Don’t forget to pack any accessories you’ll want for each outfit – jewelry, scarves, headbands, etc. Bring matching socks/tights, and shoes for each outfit if one pair won’t go along with all of them.
  • While you’re at it, if you plan on bringing any props – your ballet shoes, favorite book, softball gear, etc. – go ahead and lay that out as well. If you are going to bring your car to the session and want it to be in photos with you, be sure to wash it the night before/day of your session.

  • Get a good night’s rest the night before so you can look well rested for your session and drink lots of water the week before so that your skin looks hydrated.
  • Get your hair cut about one to two weeks prior to your session. Don’t drastically change it from your normal style in case you don’t like it. Have the hair stylist show you some easy styles you can do during outfit changes to switch it up a bit.
  • Practice your makeup the week leading up to your session so you can get it just right the day of. We do offer professional makeup artist services in addition to our packages. This is something we strongly suggest you look into for your session.

  • If you wake up two days prior to your session, or the morning of, and acne has appeared on your face – don’t pick at it and make it worse while trying to get rid of it. Apply some makeup over the area (not too heavy) and leave it at that. We offer basic retouching, which includes blemish removal; so don’t even worry about it.
  • Get a manicure the day before or day of your session to ensure your nails look their best. Don’t forget that the color needs to match all of your outfits. For this reason, and to keep a clean appearance, we suggest going with the French manicure or just a clear coat of paint.

  • Practice a nice natural smile and cute poses in a mirror or send us over some things we can talk to you about that will help you relax – your favorite movie, your boyfriend, etc.
  • If you are doing a session with your BFF or BF, don’t forget to coordinate an outfit with them so you guys don’t clash.

Most of all, just get ready to have an amazing time. It's my job to help you look  your best & this is your Senior year so lets capture the best of who you are now!!!

Conway Arkansas, Birth photographer I get so excited for every birth that I have scheduled to capture. about a month before baby's due date, I start making plans to have my sitters arranged, phone gets turned up and put under my pillow at night, I make sure I have no plans that can't be rescheduled and then I wait. I received this call around 10pm that the mother had been admitted, so my on call sitter (my awesome mother) came over to spend the night with my kiddos. Around midnight the new mother to be was at 7 cm. So I made the 5 min drive to the hospital and spent the night. Sweet baby Luke arrived that morning after a long labor. What a beautiful, emotional time for this new family and I had the privilege of witnessing and capturing these beautiful images that they can cherish for a lifetime.

Personal branding~ more than a "headshot" If you are a professional it is likely that at some point you will need to have your portrait made. Whether you are an executive, real estate agent, makeup artist, stylist, small business owner, photographer, etc., it is important that people see who it is that they are working with. I myself am guilty of not having an updated picture, which is about to change very soon!

I had the pleasure of photographing my hair stylist/makeup artist the other day. She is a truly beautiful lady. I have known and worked with her on various projects for about 5 years now. My goal for her session was for her to not only have images that she could use for social media, business cards, press, etc. but so that she could also show off her own work as a stylist/MUA. I love everything about this session & I hope that you enjoy this series as well. ~Shana

Chyanne Jewell~ Birth Story I received the call at 5am on a Saturday morning, that this was the day. Mom's water broke when they arrived at the hospital so she was definitely coming soon. We waited a few hours, then the Dr. sent everyone away...not long after we were notified that the baby's heart rate had dropped and they would have to do an emergency C-section. Thankfully Mom and baby are now doing just fine. Though I wasn't able to capture the actual birth, a very lovely birth story was captured.

Preparing for your Spring photo session It's that time of year again, time to schedule for your Spring session! There are always questions when preparing for your session so here are a few tips to make the most out of it.

1. booking your session,  Of course you want your session outdoors to take advantage of the beauty of spring, but spring flowers also mean spring showers, so it's a good idea to have a backup date in mind just incase.....or bring your umbrellas and rain boots for something fun. ;)

2. Wear layers. Spring can be unpredictable in the sense that you can go from freezing to sweltering in a matter of minutes. Especially here in Arkansas. I suggest wearing layers~ Tank top, tee shirt, cardigan, scarves, etc. That way each family member can peel off, or add a layer as they see fit and remain comfortable throughout the session.

3. When choosing your families outfits, play into the colors of Spring. shades of Green, blue, pink & yellows are always a hit for Springtime. When choosing a color scheme for the family, pick out a few different colors or variations of, and add accessories to bring it all together. This makes for more a more eye appealing portrait than if everyone is too matchy matchy .

4. Speaking of accessories, WEAR THEM! Choose jewelry, scarves, or prints that play into your theme/color scheme.

5. Be conscious of your footwear. Springtime can often mean soggy ground, so flip flops or heels are not the best choice. Instead think about wearing something comfortable and spring appropriate, like loafers, flats or boots.

6. Having small children, it can sometimes be a challenge and just plain stressful to make them be still and smile. It's always a good idea to be prepared but to also to just go with the flow. Bringing small items that can be included in the photos such as a small bouquet of fresh flowers, bubbles, etc are helpful. Download their favorite songs on your phone for a dance party (those make for great candids), have a few snacks on hand, and just having a few play breaks will make the session be more fun than work for them.

7. The most important part of any session any time of the year is to just have fun. This shouldn't be a chore, you are wanting someone to capture a time in your life that you can treasure forever. So stay calm, have fun and let the magic happen!

I hope these tips were helpful and can't wait to see you this Spring!

Miss K~ Sr. session What beautiful sunlight we had this day! I loved the sentiment that went behind our 1st location, it is a place that my Sr. went with her mom while growing up. It made me so sweet that they were able to bring some of those memories back together. I hope that you enjoy these highlights.

Miss S. Senior session     I Love Loved doing this Sr.'s session. She brought her own ideas & style to the session and rocked it! We even had a little rain during her          vintage set and the timing couldn't have been more perfect. I hope that you enjoy these highlights as much as I do.

Photographing children~What goes through their minds in 120 seconds Photographing children and toddlers can be a tricky subject. On one hand you don't want them running mad, yet those forced smiles make you want to cringe, right? You have to find that happy balance. I often use my now 4 year old daughter as a guinea pig for new ideas. When we have our sessions, I have to be ready because they will only last about 5 minutes from start to finish. My style is very natural and I want my subjects to be engaged. Now that doesn't necessarily mean, engaged with the camera. This image of my daughter looks as though she is really having a profound moment, when in reality it's more like a profound split second. I'm sure she is trying to decide if she can make a run for it and get away with it. I don't often get direct eye contact from Abree but you can always see her sparkle.

The segment of images that I am showing you all happened in about 2 minutes. I was able to keep her in the same spot, however you can see that there were many things going on through her intensely imaginative mind.

I think as parents, we need to just learn to let go a little during a photo session and just let our kids just be kids. Most often they will be in a new place so explore/play breaks are a must. That is when the magic happens.

Seniors Style, location, attitude, what's not to love about high school seniors? I took Miss C. on a road trip to some of my favorite countryside in the area. It was almost like we had 3 different sessions in one, with a variety of full sun, big clouds and a beautiful sunset. I hope that you enjoy this set as much as I do!! Talk to you soon :)

Shana Martin Photography, meet my muses I am certainly behind in the times as far as blogging, I even just asked my 4 yr old if she wanted to write this for me. She sweetly replied sure mom, then gave me a kiss. I thought it only fitting for my 1st blog post to be about my muses, Ethan (10) Abree (4), as they are the reasons along with my supportive husband that I am on this adventure. As you can see from the images below, I cherish the spontaneous moments. I love photographs with emotion, ones that will bring you back to that very moment in time. There is no doubt that I will always remember exactly how I felt when each one of these photos were taken. I hope that you enjoy seeing my work through these posts, and I am looking forward to digging deep and showing you what I'm all about. Talk to you soon!
